Trump, Congressional Leaders Meeting on US Spending Issues

Republicans Trump 2020 As government shutdown looms, GOP pushing two-week extension

President Donald Trump and congressional leaders have scheduled a summit to begin sorting out their budget differences.

Congressional leaders hope to use the two weeks afforded by the stopgap spending bill to work out an overall deal and attach it to another short-term spending bill that would be needed by December 22 to continue federal spending into January. That would give bargainers time to work through their disagreements, but they will need Democratic votes to succeed.

Lawmakers in the Democratic Party are threatening to let federal spending authority lapse if Trump denies illegal immigrants who came to the country as children safe haven. Trump ended safeguards against deportation three months ago but has expressed an openness to restoring them.

"It's a fantastic bill for the middle class", Mr. Trump said, adding that it will also spur job growth and benefit companies wanting to bring back money from overseas. We don't want to have that.

Pelosi also told reporters Thursday that lawmakers "will not leave here" without a deal to help immigrants who came to the USA illegally as children and are enrolled in the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which Trump ended three months ago. She called Trump "the only person talking about a government shutdown".

Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement Monday, "We hope the president will go into this meeting with an open mind, rather than deciding that an agreement can't be reached beforehand".

It was unclear what Trump was referring to. He said Democrats are in an "untenable position" if they push the immigration issue to the point of a government shutdown.

Trump had been supportive of a legislative solution to the immigrants' plight but says he wants to couple permission for them to stay with a total overhaul of the system.

Earlier Wednesday, hard-right House conservatives signaled an openness to a short-term spending bill this week. Asked if a federal shutdown would be a problem, he said, "Of course". Conservatives had threatened to oppose the legislation.

That's from top lawmakers and the White House.

"This bill kicks the can down the road for two weeks just so Republicans can continue focusing on the greatest tax scam in history", said Representative Barbara Lee, Democrat of California.

Pelosi said Democrats have no interest in a government shutdown, but they can't support the GOP's continuing resolution because it omits a long list of provisions the Democrats consider must-pass this year, including protections for so-called Dreamers and funding for the opioid crisis, hurricane and wildfire relief, veterans issues and pension protections ...

The hope of many Democrats is to pass the DREAM Act, legislation that would establish a path to citizenship for such immigrants.

Knowing that, Democrats are using their leverage to try forcing concessions to boost domestic spending in areas like health care and infrastructure.

"We're all here as a very friendly, well-unified group".

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) speaks about tax reform during a press conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., November 30, 2017. CHIP, which has nearly always been a bipartisan priority, expired over two months ago, but Congressional Republicans continued to play games with this vital program that helps the most vulnerable children in our society ...
