Nissa and DeNA will combine Nissan's smart mobile vision, automotive electrification and auto networking technologies with DeNA's Internet, artificial intelligence, driverless mobile software services through a modified Nissan Leaf unmanned electric vehicle in a manned test area.

The companies say they are aiming to combine the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision through technological assets in autonomous driving, vehicle electrification and connected cars, with DeNA using its expertise in the internet and artificial intelligence to develope and operate driverless mobility services.

The automaker has been working with local internet and software company DeNA since January this year to develop its driverless technology, which is fitted to modified models of Nissan's Leaf electric vehicle.

In Japan, Nissan models including the Serena minivan, the X-Trail SUV and the new Leaf electric vehicle are gaining popularity due to their semi-autonomous features including single-lane diving and auto parking, said Bloomberg. It will seek the general public to participate as passengers, through a booking application on smartphones, according to Bloomberg.

Easy Ride is a robo-vehicle for customers who intend to travel freely to their destination.

A dedicated mobile app will enable customers to choose their destination, hail a vehicle, and pay for the ride all in one place.

The duo, which have been conducting field tests of their "Easy Ride" system since joining hands earlier this year, said the tests were the first step towards their goal of launching a full-service, self-driving ride-sharing service in the country in the early 2020s.

Nissan and DeNA aim to provide the service as a new infrastructure option that supplements existing transportation. The test service, named Easy Ride, will last two weeks, the companies said in a joint statement. "With customers able to discover new local destinations through Easy Ride, the companies expect the service will also help energize cities and neighborhoods".
