NC county's servers held for ransom by hackers

Hackers freeze Mecklenburg County servers, demand $23000 Mecklenburg County offices hit by county-wide computer system outage

The hackers told Mecklenburg County they have until 1 p.m. Wednesday to pay the ransom.

WBTV says county officials were considering whether to pay the ransom.

She said in a statement, "I am confident that our backup data is secure and we have the resources to fix the situation ourselves".

"It was going to take nearly as long to fix the system after paying the ransom as it does to fix it ourselves". "And there was no guarantee that paying the criminals was a sure fix". The news release indicated the agency consulted "multiple" cybersecurity experts.

Diorio said county technology officials will use backup data from before the ransomware attack to restore the system, but the rebuild will take "patience and hard work". "So while they've frozen the servers, they've not compromised the data and not stolen data, as far as we know at this point", Diorio said Tuesday.

During a press conference Wednesday, Diorio reiterated that no personal information of county workers or customers was compromised by the hackers, which has affected 48 of 500 servers. Deputies were processing jail inmates by hand and building code inspectors switched to paper records after a county employee unleashed the malicious software earlier this week by opening an email attachment. Not paying and instead rebuilding applications could take longer still, she added.

During a speaking engagement at Charlotte's Kennedy Middle School, Governor Roy Cooper said the county did the right thing by not paying the ransom.

"You're taking a risk when you do that", he said.

In the past, the city has been hit by cyber attacks, but officials say they have always been able to get everything back up and running pretty quickly.

"Our priorities are going to be systems that affect health and human services, like the Department of Social Services, Health Services, Child Support Services", Diehl said. The state's largest city issued a statement that its separate computer systems have not been affected and that it severed direct connections to county computers.

Mecklenburg County officials say a hacker gained access to their servers after a county employee opened an email attachment.

But WBTV has learned the demand is for "substantially" more than that, according to a county official with knowledge of the ongoing efforts to retrieve the county's data who asked not to be identified in order to provide details of the ongoing internal county discussions.
