Eating Cheese Every Day Might Actually Be Good for You

Eating cheese daily may cut risk of heart attack and stroke, new study suggests A New Study Shows Cheese Might Be Good For Your Heart

Cheese, like other dairy products, contains high levels of saturated fat-which has been linked to high cholesterol, atherosclerosis and an increased risk of heart disease. Researchers suggest that eating around 40 grams (or 1.41 ounces) of cheese every day could help to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Chinese researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 15 studies from Europe and the USA, which monitored the health effects of cheese consumption in more than 200,000 people. What they found is that those who ate cheese on a regular basis also tended to not develop heart disease. The majority of these studies included only people without heart disease and tracked participants for ten years or more.

The link between cheese and lowered heart disease risks might be because people who eat cheese every day are already healthier, or have enough income to afford the habit, the researchers point out. The key, as with most foods, is to consume it in moderation.

While cheese is a source of saturated fat, the researchers state that it "also has potentially beneficial nutrients", such as calcium, which helps limit how much saturated fat the body absorbs. Those who got the most benefit were eating about a matchbook sized serving of cheese a day.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the data regarding cheese consumption was self-reported, and people are notorious for over or under-estimating the amount of food they've eaten.

Many types of cheese have high levels of probiotics which could lower inflammation.

Yet exceeding moderate portions of cheese won't boost benefits, and may in fact trigger negative health conditions, experts warn.

"There is some evidence that cheese-as a substitute for milk, for example-may actually have a protective effect on the heart", says Stewart. Those with the lowest risks of these illnesses were those who consumed around 40 grams a day of cheese - a quantity around the size of a book of matches. Overall, though, the news is good for cheese lovers.
