Google-Amazon Feud Explodes With Decision To Pull YouTube From Devices

"We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible".

Fire TV owners, I hope you don't enjoy watching much YouTube, because the app is about to disappear from your device.

In September 2017, Google removed YouTube from the Amazon Echo Show. Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website.

The move was particularly to push people from Google's Chromecast to Amazon's Fire TV dongles and devices. YouTube has more than one billion users worldwide, close to one third of total internet users, and the inability to watch it on Amazon devices is a major inconvenience. It's understandable that Google is frustrated by Amazon using its service but not selling its products, but pulling YouTube from Amazon's devices means that Google is making it harder to use YouTube on Amazon's hardware.

The skirmish began when YouTube pulled its content from the Amazon Echo Show.

At issue is a perceived lack of "reciprocity" with Amazon failing to offer equal access to Google's products and services, prompting the dramatic rebuke. For example, Amazon does not sell Apple TV in its store, nor does it plan to sell Apple HomePod, Apple's smart speaker competitor to Amazon Echo.

Given the Silicon Valley rivals' status as two of the biggest companies in the world by market capitalization, its little surprise that they already compete intensely across several areas, from online search to the sale of voice-controlled products. In 2016, YouTube's viewership on TV screens grew 90% compared to 2015, according to the Google-owned company. The latest feud in Silicon Valley became more obvious and public on December 5 when Google said that it would block its popular video-streaming app YouTube from two Amazon streaming devices, criticising Amazon for not selling Google's products on its platform. "We hope to be able to reach an agreement and resolve these issues soon".

The Chocolate Factory on Tuesday said it would be filing suit against the Bezos Bunch after it failed to cut a deal to allow its own streaming services to coexist with those of Amazon.
