However, by selling the 482kW supercar less than a month after taking delivery, the wrestler lost Ford nearly "two years of ambassadorship and brand value", claims the automaker.

Professional American wrestler, actor and WWE Superstar John Cena has been sued by Ford for selling his 2017 GT before his contract ended. Apparently when a vehicle company builds a very limited-run machine and hand-picks people from a long list of applicants to get one, it's generally good taste to keep it for a while.

When supercar makers deliver a new rare and expensive model to the market - like the McLaren P1 or Ferrari LaFerrari - they go to a lot of trouble to ensure buyers are real aficionados who will love and cherish their new vehicle. The report says he sold the vehicle for cash to pay expenses, but wouldn't it make more sense to sell other expensive cars in his notable fleet - ones that he wasn't contractually obligated to keep?

Ford says not only is it unfair that Cena allegedly profited from the sale, but that the sale means "Ford has suffered additional damages and losses, including, but not limited to, loss of brand value, ambassador activity, and customer goodwill due to the improper sale". Ford specified a 24-month ownership period as a minimum to qualify for a GT purchase.

"Ford's lawsuit said Cena's Application Programme appeal included the line, "[If] I were to be deemed fit for ownership I would most certainly use every vehicle of communication to let the world know about the auto, the brand, and the experience".

Cena's YouTube series Auto Geeks makes a point of telling the story behind each one of his cars; we're surprised this is the story he wants to tell about his 2017 Ford GT.

It seems it doesn't pay to mess with the Blue Oval.
