Veteran Bollywood Actor Shashi Kapoor Dies At Age 79

The actor breathed his last at Mumbai's Kolkilaben Hospital.

He acted in some of the superhits like Sharmilee, Kabhi Kabhie, Baseraa, Deewar, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Satyam Shivan Sundaram, A Gale Lag Ja, Suhaag, Kanyadaan among others romancing heroines like Sharmila Tagore, Zeenat Aman, Rakhee, Nanda and others.

Another photo of Shashi Kapoor's grandnephew Ranbir Kapoor leaving the Kokilaben Hospital has surfaced.

He had been suffering from ailments for the past few years.

He is survived by two sons, Kunal and Karan, and a daughter, Sanjana, who takes care of the Prithvi Theatre, one of Mumbai's best known theatres. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2011 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015 (for the year 2014).

Shashi Kapoor was the third and youngest son of Prithviraj Kapoor.

Kapoor appeared in 116 films out of which he played the protagonist in 61 of the movies.

Kapoor and wife Jennifer Kendal together led to the foundation of the iconic Prithvi Theatre in November 1978 which now lies in the heart of the Mumbai city.

He started acting in films as a child artiste in the late 1940s and appeared in films like Sangram (1950) and Dana Paani (1953) under the name of Shashiraj as there was another actor by the same name who used to act in mythological films as child artiste.

Born on March 18, 1938, to the illustrious and formidable theater and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor hit the spotlight at the age of four, acting in plays directed and produced by his father.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Kapoor acted in a string of Bollywood hits, some of which he co-starred in with actor Amitabh Bachchan, including Deewar (The Wall, 1975) and Namak Halaal (The Loyal Servant, 1982) besides Kabhie Kabhie.

His death has left many devastated.
