Code.org is marking the beginning of Computer Science Education Week with a development of its own: $12 million in new funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Infosys and PwC.

Founded in 2013 by twin brothers Hadi and Ali Partovi, Code.org has found many backers in Silicon Valley.

For Computer Science Education Week, Governor Cooper will join middle school students at a Google-sponsored science coding workshop Thursday in Charlotte.

While Code.org wants to give all students better access to computer science education, the organization particularly focuses on reaching girls and minorities who are underrepresented in tech fields. The governor engaged in "Hour of Code" activities with students and teachers during his visit.

According to Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org, 10 million girls now have accounts on the site. "Right now most schools in California don't offer any computer science classes and sadly, that disparity is punctuated by striking gender and racial gaps", Lt. Governor Newsom said.

When Code.org started four years ago, it couldn't get a single school district to commit to teaching computer science in every high school.

"Computer programming skills are critical for many 21st century jobs", Gov. Cooper said. According to Code.org, computing jobs are the No. 1 source of new wages in the United States-these are jobs in every industry, and they're projected to grow at twice the rate of all other jobs.

On Monday, students at Waterman Elementary School in Harrisonburg participated in Hour of Code.

"Computer science education provides foundational learning in computational thinking that enables students to develop and apply critical thinking skills, demonstrate imagination and creativity, practice collaboration, exhibit leadership, and employ problem-solving skills", the proclamation reads.
