That'll involve more strictly enforcing the company's unwanted software policy, which already demands that app developers be transparent with users when collecting their personal information. Apps that handle user or device data will soon have to provide their own privacy policies.

Recent research by Yale University's Privacy Lab and Exodus Privacy showed that three quarters of Android apps contain trackers that collect user data for targeted advertising, to glean their locations, and to analyse behaviour. The alerts will pop up on app store and webpages that lead to the offending apps.

Users will be warned through Google's safe browsing feature about apps that collect personal data without consent.

Safe Browsing warnings will appear "on apps and on websites leading to apps that collect a user's personal data without their consent".

They must also ask a user's permission before they collect and transmit personal data that's unrelated to the functionality of the program, and clearly and prominently explain how the information will be used.

In order to avoid Google's ban hammer, Android app developers must follow a series of rules regarding user data collection and disclosure. The updated policy will help Google to reduce unwanted and harmful behavior on Android. All that users will see is a warning, and one that doesn't quite stop them from using the app in the first place.

These requirements apply to all app functions, and Google oogle says that during analytics and crash reports any list of installed packages that are unrelated to the app can't be transmitted from the device. If this requirement isn't met, warnings may be shown on users' devices.

New and existing applications will have 60 days to conform to these new rules, or developers risk their app displaying the new message asking for consent.
