Voyager 1 Fires Up its Old Thrusters After 37 Years
After 37 years, Voyager 1 has fired up its trajectory thrusters

For auto read Voyager 1, and for engine read a set of four trajectory thrusters, and that's exactly what NASA boffins have done.
Launched in September 1977, the plutonium-powered probe encountered Jupiter and its moons in March 1979, then flew by Saturn in November 1980, before heading northward out of the ecliptic plane, the disk in which the solar system's planets reside.
Astronomy textbooks were rewritten on a wide scale thanks to the Voyager spacecraft, which zoomed past Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus. The team might conduct a similar test with Voyager 2's backups to ensure it can also send data back after it follows its older sibling to interstellar space in a few years' time. The thrusters fire in tiny pulses, or "puffs", lasting mere milliseconds to turn the spacecraft.
Nasa had grown anxious about the altitude control thrusters on Voyager 1, which have been wearing down.
Experts at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California made a decision to turn to four backup thrusters that were last used on November 8, 1980. The probe now uses its attitude control thrusters to make tiny corrections - firing for only milliseconds at a time - to rotate it to point its antenna towards Earth. However, almost 20 hours after firing up the backup thrusters, engineers received a signal from the Voyager back on Earth, which meant their test was successful.
Lo and behold, on Wednesday, Nov. 29, they learned the TCM thrusters worked perfectly - and just as well as the attitude control thrusters.
The JPL's engineers began to look into alternatives, and found a new way to steer the spacecraft: the probe's trajectory correction maneuver (TCM) thrusters.
"The Voyager team got more excited each time with each milestone in the thruster test", Barber said. They will do so by switching over to backup TCM thrusters in early January of next year.
The spacecraft - now over 141 times the distance between the earth and the sun - is expected to go dark some time in the next five years as the remaining energy is depleted. According to Voyager project manager Suzanne Dodd, the reactivated thrusters should help extend the life of the probe for another "two to three years".
Each Voyager spacecraft carries four TCM thrusters and 12 small attitude control rocket jets, divided into two redundant chains of six thrusters.
Voyager 1, the probe which became the first man-made object to leave the solar system in 2012, has been away from home for a long, long time - approximately 40 years.
The spacecraft are powered by radioisotope thermal generators (RTGs) that generate heat from the decay of plutonium-238.
The spacecraft has already provided us with some answers about our solar system.
After four decades in the military, Shafik touted his military experience as one of his strengths in the 2012 vote. He departed to the UAE soon after his defeat fearing that he would be persecuted on corruption charges.
Taylor was having a rough day and appeared to have some trouble with the knee after taking a sack in the first half of the game. Rookie coach Sean McDermott made the questionable decision to start Peterman, a fifth-round pick, against the on November 19.
Speaking in Missouri, the U.S. leader derided Mr Kim, describing him as a "sick puppy" and "little rocket man". The claim was not proven and experts have cast doubt on the country's ability to master such technology.
Both of his over-par scores came on par-5s, which he played in 1 over, clearly an aspect of his game that he will need to improve. He admitted that was "frustrating because I have a hard time with this into-the-grain, ball sitting down".
That decision avoided three straight trips to the Fiesta for Ohio State and also a Penn State-USC rematch in the Fiesta. They earned the final New Years Six bowl bid by virtue of finishing No. 11 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
He said that the electorate of the state gave a befitting reply to the baseless allegations levelled by opposition parties. The same were used in 2007 Assembly elections where the BSP emerged victorious and formed the government on its own.
Whether Stanley gets the same punishment remains to be seen, but it doesn't appear he has been arrested during his Georgia career. A little over five hours after that game, one starter on that team would find himself in the back of a squad auto .
One person is dead and five are injured after a hit-and-run incident outside a hookah bar in NY early Sunday, police said. Police say four people were struck when the vehicle drove up on the sidewalk in queens around 4:45 a.m. eastern time.
The Bills Jerry Hughes was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, so, somehow, the Bills were the ones losing yards on the play. The Patriots got off to a slow start in the first half when the Bills held them to just three field goals.
That rate is the country's lowest since February 2008, months before the Great Recession took its toll on the economy. Ontario's jobless rate fell to 5.5 per cent, the lowest level since 2000, StatsCan said.
Transport Minister Abbas Akhoundi said Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman will "soon become an important commercial hub for Iran ". Zarif said the port would reinforce Iran-India mutual and regional cooperation.
