Canada's jobless rate hits lowest since 2008 as hiring spikes

That rate is the country's lowest since February 2008, months before the Great Recession took its toll on the economy.
The numbers show employment increased for the second month in a row in November, with the addition of 80,000 new jobs across Canada. Statistics Canada says this trend has been consistent over 2017.
The consensus among economists had been for an increase of 10,000 jobs in November, and for the unemployment rate to reach 6.2 per cent. Looked at regionally, the census data showed that immigrants constituted half of all workers in Toronto, Ontario - Canada's largest city - and 43.2 per cent of workers in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 2016.
Statistics Canada says the economy churned out another 79,500 net new jobs in November and drove the jobless rate down 0.4 percentage points from 6.3 per cent the month before. That's faster than population growth.
Ontario's jobless rate fell to 5.5 per cent, the lowest level since 2000, StatsCan said.
Full-time work has driven a year's worth of job gains in Canada, pushing November's unemployment rate to the lowest in almost a decade.
The province's unemployment rate was little changed from the previous month at at 4.8 per cent, though still the lowest among the provinces.
