Round 6 saw Cotto deliver a right hook that sent Ali flying to the ropes, reminding the younger fighter whose goodbye party it was.

Saturday night mark the end of the road for Miguel Cotto.

Miguel Cotto stepped into the ring late Saturday night and the crowd of 12,391 was on its feet at Madison Square Garden, showering the world's most famous boxing stage with high-decibel noise.

The biggest win of his career by far, Ali earned the WBO world super welterweight title by playing spoiler and has certainly opened up great opportunities for himself going forward.

"I already know that's gonna come", Ali said during a post-fight press conference.

But the Puerto Rican, who won world titles in four weight categories, could not handle the quickness of 29-year-old Ali. He may have been on the wrong end of the scorecard, but his fans could hardly feel cheated. Moments later, Ali connected with a left hook and Cotto looked like he was in a bit of trouble, though he quickly recovered. Ali wobbled Cotto in the 2nd with a stunning straight right but seconds later went down via a slip to kill any momentum he may have had. Previously the aggressor, Cotto began to fight backing up, which had the effect of emboldening Ali to increasingly turn up the pressure.

Judges scored the fight 115-113, 115-113, 116-112 in favour of 29-year-old Ali, who is from NY. Ali repeated the feat in the third round also this time from a left hand, rocking Cotto once again as Ali's confidence grew.

Cotto's last fight is being shown by Box Nation, with coverage getting underway at 2am (Sunday morning). Ali stemmed the tide in the eighth round, finding the bounce in his legs again and not hesitating to let his hands go and trade punches with the fighter eight years his senior. Take your choice, Cotto lost the last four rounds or Ali won them, but that closing spurt by the 11-to-1 underdog proved the difference.

Earlier, Angel Acosta dominated Juan Alejo before knocking him out in the 10th round for the WBO junior flyweight crown that Japan's Kosei Tanaka vacated last Friday. Shortly after the final bell had rung, his hand was raised in victory in a historic bout that marked the conclusion of a legendary, Hall of Fame career.

"Whatever [Golden Boy Promotions] has next, I'll take it".

Ali added: "Good things happen to good people". "I have been training since I was 8 years old, and I am glad I got this win at MSG, in my hometown".

Cotto was not very nostalgic after the fight but thanked his loyal fans.

"Thank you to everyone", Cotto said in English. I am proud to call Madison Square Garden my second home.

After the fight, the crowd lingered for a video presentation of Cotto's career highlights on the JumboTron.
