Eleven cases of murder and 12 rapes were registered against foreigners in 2016 all over India.

While Uttar Pradesh reported 4,889 murder cases, the national capital reported almost 40 per cent of rape cases, said NCRB's annual publication "Crime in India 2016" released by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. While Maharashtra ranks fifth in the total number of cases filed, in terms of crime registered per lakh of the population, it holds the eighth rank among 29 states and seven union territories in the country. Other cases like murders, kidnap and cyber crime have registered an increase.Andhra Pradesh recorded 193 dowry deaths as against 174 in 2015, apart from 31 women trafficking and 626 kidnapping and abduction of women cases a year ago.

Madhya Pradesh comes out top with 20.6% of the total number of cases in 2016 followed by Maharashtra - 18.4%.

Atrocities/crime against scheduled tribes (STs) have also increased.

However, the number of cases has come down by 7% from 6,396 in 2015 to 5,942 in 2016. The numbers of cities followed a similar patter, with Lucknow reporting the highest number of atrocities reported among the 19 metropolitan cities, and Patna and Jaipur following.

According to NCRB's 2016 data, a total of 136 murders due to caste conflict have been reported in India in 2016 whereas, the number of the same in 2015 was 828. "Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2", the NCRB report says.

This year, a total of 8,132 cases of human trafficking were reported in the country with West Bengal reporting the highest number of cases (3,579) sharing almost 44% of the total cases followed by Rajasthan (1,422) sharing 17.9% of such cases in the country.

Of the 52,209 people who went missing in 2016, as many as 28,316 are women and 23,893 are men.

Further, the NCRB report has given ninth rank to AP based on the crime rate calculated as per population. Maharashtra reported highest 11,396 cases, followed by UP with 11,335 cases and MP with 8,717 cases. In all, 1,226 crimes were registered against foreigners from 47 countries in 2016.

Other crimes in which the state has alarming figures are assault with intent to disrobe (highest in country), human trafficking (third highest) and robbery (highest). With 5,453 cases of kidnapping and abduction, the city beat Mumbai and Bengaluru, which recorded 1,876 and 879 cases, respectively. An analysis of 19 metropolitan cities by NCRB finds that Delhi accounted for 38.8% of total crimes reported in metro cities followed by Bengaluru (8.9%) and Mumbai (7.7%).
