Rick Pitino isn't just going to go away without a fight.

The former Louisville head coach is now suing his former employer for a whopping $38.7 million.

Pitino was first placed on administrative leave, then fired by Louisville on October 16 amid an FBI investigation involving corruption and alleged illegal payments to recruit Brian Bowen, who was cleared by the FBI but will not play for the Cardinals this season.

Pitino claims the school breached his contract when it put him on administrative leave without notifying him and then firing him with cause. The suit, filed in a U.S. District Court in Kentucky, is seeking $4.3 million per year through June 2026, which is the remaining value of his contract.

Pitino claimed last month he had no knowledge of any illegal activity happening within his program and took a lie detector test to clear his name.

University spokesperson John Karman said the university's aware of the lawsuit, but does not comment on pending litigation.

Pitino was not named in the Federal Bureau of Investigation case but many reports linked him to being one of the coaches involved.

In September, Pitino was "effectively fired" without proper notice, according to the lawsuit. "Coach Pitino never has had any part - active, passive, or through willful ignorance - in any effort, successful or unsuccessful, completed or abandoned, to pay any recruit, or any family member of a recruit, or anyone else on a recruit's behalf, as an inducement to attend the University of Louisville".
