The casting comes amid criticism that Hollywood was using white actors to play Asian characters.

The studio says Wednesday that Chinese actress Liu Yifei, who spent part of her childhood in NY, will play the warrior in the live-action epic from director Niki Caro.

Disney is getting down to business with a new "Mulan."

Liu, who has also appeared under the stage name Crystal Liu, is an actress, model and singer who began her career in TV dramas before moving into films. Many also voiced support for the diverse, star-studded cast of Disney's live-action The Lion King adaptation, announced earlier this month. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the casting directors travelled to five continents in search for the flawless candidate who is ethnically Chinese and equipped with martial arts skills, the ability to speak English, and of course, star quality. She also starred opposite Emile Hirsch in Danish auteur Bille August's period romance The Chinese Widow, which opened the Shanghai International Film Festival in June.

She has starred alongside Jackie Chan in the 2008 action movie The Forbidden Kingdom and 2014's Outcast with Nicolas Cage. The 1998 animated version, voice-starring Ming-Na Wen together with Eddie Murphy and B.D. Wong, earned $304.3 million universal as well as Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Disney has finally found the actress to play the titular role for its upcoming live-action remake of Mulan.

The 2019 film is a remake of Disney's 1998 animated hit, which told the story of Hua Mulan, a young woman who, in 5th-century China, disguised herself as a man in order to join up to the army run by her father.
