The breach, which the company disclosed last week involving 57 million users worldwide, saw names, mobile phone numbers and email addresses compromised, the company told UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

"Washington law is clear: When a data breach puts people at risk, businesses must inform them", Ferguson said in the release. Seven million drivers had their details stolen during the breach, alongside 50 million active Uber users.

"The Board will be calling Uber's attention on the matter of its alleged admission on the breach of data privacy and will conduct its own investigation", LTFRB board member Aileen Lizada said in a text message to reporters on Wednesday.

Uber has confirmed that 2.7 million United Kingdom customers had their personal details stolen in a 2016 cyber attack. "Consumers expect and deserve protection from disclosure of their personal information".

Ferguson's lawsuit is the first from a state, although attorneys general in New York, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut and IL have begun investigations, and the city of Chicago and Cook County have filed a lawsuit. If that penalty were applied to each of the affected drivers in Washington, it would total almost $22 million in penalties.

The lawsuit seeks civil penalties in the millions of dollars.

Last week, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi revealed the massive breach that took place under his embattled predecessor, Travis Kalanick, and The New York Times later reported that the company had paid a $100,000 ransom to the hackers responsible in an effort to sweep the incident under the rug.

"Uber users should continue to be vigilant and follow the advice from the NCSC, which can be found on its website".

The NPC considers Uber as a Personal Information Controller and should provide detailed information on the nature of the incident, the scope of measure, and the remedial measures taken.

"We are committed to changing the way we do business, putting integrity at the core of every decision we make and working hard to regain the trust of consumers", said Nathan Hambley, an Uber spokesman.

Uber also faces lawsuits filed by consumers over the issue.
