Some of the comments provided by those surveyed seemed to reveal a tension with Ireland's firm position on Brexit, with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar insisting that talks can not progress to trade issues until Britain guarantees that there will be no hard border, a stance that led to English politician Kate Hoey, who grew up in Northern Ireland, saying that Ireland would have to pay for a hard border if there is no Brexit deal.

The Prime Minister said: "As the European Union themselves have said, nothing is agreed until everything is agreed".

"There have been a number of positive reactions from other European leaders about the importance of these trade talks".

Sources indicate the ground has now been laid for political agreement on the question of the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland after Brexit, which would allow both sides to start discussing the UK's future trading relationship with the bloc.

"I've been accused by some of using this issue in a way that's inappropriate to try and put pressure on the British side in terms of the Brexit negotiations - that's simply not true", he says.

"Then all that money - £60 billion lying around - we could use that to help the NHS and other things and even do tax cuts".

"I think our neighbour has acted disgracefully. Prime-Minister May has stated categorically there would be no power borders erected by Britain, but any "hard" border will be erected by the Irish state", said Diane James, MEP representing the South East of the UK. Instead came the Easter Rebellion of 1916, the Irish War of Independence, the partition of the island between the independent Republic and Northern Ireland (part of the UK), the Irish Civil War, and three decades of terrorist war in Northern Ireland that only ended 20 years ago.

"Don't undermine our position and our sovereign integrity".

Mr Paisley is one of 10 DUP pro-Brexit MPs who are propping up Theresa May's minority government on key votes.

Another man drew a line from Sligo to Dublin to illustrate what he believes to be the Irish border and said: "I think it's going to cause some kind of segregation".

That included areas like agriculture. The Democratic Unionist party, which holds the balance of power in the House of Commons, said it would not tolerate anything that decoupled Northern Ireland from the UK.

The Labour MP Kate Hoey and Jim Shannon and Ian Paisley of the DUP were sharply critical of the Government's demand for more detail on how Britain would avoid a hard Border after Brexit.
