According to Reuters, the union that more than 15,000 flights scheduled between December 15-31 were affected by the glitch.

Spokesman Matt Miller said the airline's employees are, "working diligently to address the issue and expect to avoid cancellations this holiday season".

Pilots were notified of the error on Friday.

The new and the old visual design of American Airlines together at Miami International Airport, Miami, Florida. The union wants input with American to find a solution that will motivate pilots to give up vacation they've already been granted after years of working over the holidays, according to Dennis Tajer, an APA spokesman.

American Airlines is the largest USA carrier.

Based on a company memo sent to Bloomberg, it seems that flights now without a captain, first officer, or both, are based out of American Airlines' largest hub, Dallas-Forth Worth International, along with Boston, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, and Charlotte.

The company is offering pilots one-and-a-half times their usual hourly wage to come to work in order to meet the high travel demands. A grievance filed by the union requires union login credentials, preventing Jalopnik from accessing it. Jalopnik has reached out to the union in regards to this, as well as how the union has advised pilots to approach offers from American Airlines in the meantime, and has yet to hear back.

CNBC says it's not clear right now how pilots will be assigned to the flights or if any of them will be canceled, but the union says American's plan to do so violated union contracts. The reported holiday period of flights without pilots next month is five days longer.

"This is certainly not routine".
