Amazon today revealed a new service called Sumerian that allows anyone to create and run augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and 3D applications easily. Today, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a new piece of online software that creators can use for their VR and augmented reality (AR) projects called Amazon Sumerian.

Amazon writes, "With Amazon Sumerian's editor, developers can build realistic virtual environments, populate them with 3D objects and animated characters, and script how they interact with each other and the application's users". Now in preview, Sumerian allows creation of VR and AR scenes that target platforms like the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Google Daydream, and it works with several other Amazon products. Sumerian also takes a note from Unreal's Blueprints interface, allowing creators with no coding experience to use a visual scripting tool to put together all the logic needed to make the world interactive.

Experiences built in Sumerian aren't confined to a single platform, the post said. That includes mobile devices, web browsers and head-mounted displays such as Facebook Inc.'s Oculus Rift.

The service comes with a library of prebuilt objects developers can use to populate their AR and VR apps, plus a number of scene templates to get the ball rolling. Amazon plans to make its tools compatible with Google's (goog) AR software tools for Android-powered devices soon, but it didn't say when.

You can select from pre-existing assets from Amazon or import your own in FBX and OBJ files.

Amazon wants a part of the nascent markets for virtual and augmented reality. The library is fully integrated with Google's Tilt Brush and Blocks apps, letting you modify numerous objects to better fit your project. 3D objects (e.g. furniture, buildings, and natural objects) and characters can be place into into "scenes" (e.g. rooms, office environments, and landscapes).

"Customers across industries see the potential of VR and AR technologies for a wide range of uses, from educating and training employees to creating new customer experiences", said Marco Argenti, Vice President, Technology, AWS, in a statement. "For instance, we integrated Mapbox's points of interest and global terrain maps with Amazon Sumerian so data is delivered and rendered in real-time".
