Facebook to alert users influenced by fake Russian accounts

Facebook users will soon be able to see if they interacted with Russian trolls Facebook to let users see if they 'liked' Russian accounts

Facebook has announced the creation of a new portal that will allow users to see what dubious pages created by Russian operatives they may have followed, liked or interacted with during the 2016 USA presidential election.

Facebook will launch a new online tool that it said will let users see whether they followed Russia-linked accounts or contents disguised as U.S. users, media reports said Thursday.

Facebook has announced it will be making a portal that will allow users to find out if they liked pages or followed Instagram accounts made by the Internet Research Agency, the Russian internet company that was exposed after the 2016 election.

A Facebook spokesperson was not able to tell CBS News if the company has an exact release date planned for the portal.

The Internet Research Agency was behind hundreds of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts and posted thousands of politically-charged messages.

Facebook is developing a tool that will inform its users in the United States whether they are "liking" or have "liked" pages associated directly or indirectly with foreign agencies.

Last month, Facebook revealed that people in Russian Federation had published thousands of posts via Facebook that were seen by up to 126 million Americans before and after Donald Trump's election win - with millions more Instagram users having also seen similar content.

Russian Federation denies any involvement in the U.S. elections.

What they're not doing: Telling users whether they were exposed to content from the pages in their Newsfeed, even if they didn't follow them. Facebook has confirmed that 29 million Americans saw Russian propaganda content on their newsfeed, while 126 million shared posts.

"During our open hearing with Facebook, Twitter and Google earlier this month, we asked them to notify their users if they had been targeted by or seen content as part of the Russian active measures campaign". The companies have yet to respond to similar requests, according to Blumenthal.
