Hackers stole data from 57 million Uber users and drivers in 2016What was the Uber data hack?

Presumably, he knew the legal risks of covering up the Uber data breach, to say nothing of the ethical implications.

The stolen information included the names, email addresses and mobile numbers of Uber customers globally.

Uber said on Wednesday that it has been in touch with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and several states to discuss a hack a year ago that exposed data on millions of customers and drivers, the latest scandal to rock the ride-hailing firm.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", Dara Khosrowshahi, who joined Uber as CEO in September, wrote in a blog post addressing the data breach. He was not at the helm when it happened.

The company said two hackers gained access to proprietary information used by Uber and stored on GitHub, a service that allows engineers to collaborate on software code. In fact, Uber paid the hackers $100,000 to keep the data breach under wraps.

A SECRET data hack affecting 57 million Uber customers and drivers has been exposed. "While I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes", Khosrowshahi reassured.

One of those actions was terminating two employees "who led the response to this incident".

Attorneys general in at least four USA states, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts and NY, said they had launched investigations into the breach.

The hack was discovered by an external team that was tasked with finding out the activities of Sullivan's security team which is said to have taken many decisions that have affected the company.

State law in Uber's home state of California calls on companies to disclose big data breaches without unreasonable delay, meaning the handling of the hack could herald a rough stretch of road there. For instance, it's expected ransomware payments - paying hackers to unlock files after a cyberattack - will top $2 billion this year, according to new research from cybersecurity firm Bitdefender. The hack didn't penetrate Uber's corporate systems or infrastructure, he said.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is investigating if this breach has affected Uber customers in the UK.

In August of this year Uber reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations it made deceptive privacy and data security claims. While Khosrowshahi is promising change, Kalanick's place in a leadership role serves as a reminder they are keeping someone who signed off on controversial issues tied to the company.
