That's right, the Nintendo Switch is getting a Valkyria Chronicles game. It has a 2018 release date and it will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and the Switch. Players will take control of a group of soldiers defending against the Imperial army in battles that blends turn-based strategy and third-person gunplay.

The game is set in the fictional year of 1350 EC, war has engulfed Europa due to the Second Europan War between the Atlantic Federation against the Empire's forces.

Its story is something of a soft reboot for the franchise - Valkyria Chronicles 4 takes place around the same time as Valkyria Chronicles 1, although the action focuses on a fresh set of characters. As a last-ditch attempt at capturing the Imperial Capital, the Federation decides to initiate Operation Northern Cross.

Instead of following the tale of Squad 7, Valkyria Chronicles 4 puts you into the shoes Squad E, a band including the likes of Commander Claude Wallace, engineer Riley Miller, "hothead" Darcsen Raz, sniper Kai Schulen "and more". Visually, it manages to retain the art style for the series and looks better than its predecessors, although it is still not as impressive for a current generation game. The last game, Valkyria Chronicles III, was only released for the PSP in Japan back in 2011.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is now scheduled for a Japanese PlayStation 4 release on March 21, with a Switch release coming later in summer.

The Valkyria spinoff that came out earlier this year might have disappointed fans but they're going to be delighted with what Sega has announced today.
