If you've been holding out to get Apple's HomePod as a holiday present, we've got some bad news for you: the company has delayed the speaker until next year.

Apple now says it needs more time to ideal the speaker's technology. "We'll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018", it said. This is speculation, of course - unless Apple provides more information, we may never know the reason behind the delay.

Apple first debuted the HomePod in June at its annual WWDC developer conference. But the Cupertino, CA-based Apple says the device needs a little more tinkering.

Apple announced it's delaying the launch of its HomePod until "early 2018", CNBC reported Friday. Priced at $349, Apple is setting the bar high for the smart speaker as a higher-end sound system like Sonos. Amazon created Alexa for the Echo, and the virtual assistant has gone on to be the big breakout tech star of 2017. It's also possible-and I think more likely-Apple is having a tough time overcoming design issues.

It has a seven-beam forming tweeter array to fill a room multi-directionally, plus a 4-inch woofer for bass control.

If you've been saving up your pennies to buy a HomePod before the end of the year put on your patience trousers because that's not happening. If HomePod isn't shipping by March we may be waiting until late June before it shows up on store shelves.

The Apple HomePod is created to take on the Amazon Echo in smart functionality but also systems like Sonos in audio quality.
