The announcement by the GI registry has apparently drawn the curtain over an intense two-and-a-half year battle between the two states over the origin of the popular ball-shaped sweet made from cottage cheese.

A couple of years ago, Odisha had claimed that Rosogulla had originated from Puri's Jagannath Templ, where it has been a part of the religious rituals since centuries ago. This means Odisha may continue to lay historical claim to its own form of Rasagola or Kheermohan.

West Bengal's Education Minister Partha Chattetjee said, "Odisha unnecessarily raised a dispute over the issue". In the bitter but sweet tug-of-war, West Bengal has been declared the winner. The fight which was over the origin of rosogolla.

Fortunately for the sweet as well as for all its lovers West Bengal won the legal battle and was granted the GI or the Geographical Indication status for the sweet.

Expressing her delight over the news, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is now in London, tweeted: "Sweet news for us all". He started experimenting trying to make a new sweet from 1864. "We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla", Didi's official handle said. It is believed that Naveen Chandra Das, the famous candies maker of Bengal, invented Rosgulla before the year 1868. Now with this Geographical Indication now rosogolla belongs to Bengal, not Odisha. Abdur Rezzak Mollah, food processing minister in Banerjee's cabinet, told Hindustan Times that he was "happy and relieved".

Veteran stage and screen personality Soumitra Chatterjee said: "Historically, it feels good to know officially that rosogolla was invented in Bengal".

The GI tag was primarily developed with the goal of recognising the unique identity connecting different products and places.

"The state government has borne the entire expenditure of the fight", added Das.
