Moreover, as far Clyne's national team chances go, he will find it hard to make the cut for next year's World Cup, especially with the likes of Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier the likely choices for England manager Gareth Southgate for the right-back position.

He was initially not assigned a return date, with the club stating he would be sidelined for a "significant period of time" but it now seems likely he will remain out until the New Year.

The defender resumed light-intensity running at Melwood in September, with manager Jurgen Klopp hailing "a big step" forward in his recovery, but the 26-year-old has since suffered a setback.

Youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have so far filled in for Clyne, alternating in games with Gomez often being preferred in the league whilst Alexander-Arnold has featured in most Champions League games.

He will also be hoping to make Gareth Southgate's England squad for next summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.

"He was in a good way and then had a little setback".

"That was not an injury, and usually with a healthy and fit player you wouldn't even think about it".

Clyne's absence also ruled him out of the Reds" squad for the Champions League group stages, with Klopp forecasting it would be "some time' before he returned.

The English media reported on Monday evening that the England global has undergone corrective back surgery on an issue that has plagued him for months, and will continue to do so with the 25-year-old now set to miss another three months of action.
