Five people died in a shooting spree on Tuesday that ended at a school in a remote area of rural Northern California and some children were among the wounded, according to officials and local media.

An employee with the Corning Unified School District told KCRA there were reports of an active shooter at the school, and there were confirmed injuries.

Johnston later said authorities had recovered a semiautomatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the shooter.

Schultz quoted another witness, Casey Burnett, who said the gunman was "driving around and shooting randomly from his vehicle".

The shooting happened at or near an elementary school in Rancho Tehama around 8:00 am. local time. "A number of students" were taken on a medevac from the area, Johnston said, and the school has been cleared.

"That evolved to multiple victims and multiple shots at the school", the official said, adding that he's been told the suspected shooter was shot and killed by law enforcement.

The remaining kids who were at the school have been moved to a safe location, Johnston said.

Some 100 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, and students at the school have been safely evacuated, he added.

California Governor Jerry Brown said in a statement he and his wife were "saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren".

Police were still trying to get an accurate count of the injured, Johnston said. Brian Flint said that his neighbor, whom he knows only as Kevin, also stole his truck. The California Highway Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation also were assisting.
