GameStop pushes pause on unlimited used game rental program

GameStop halts its unlimited used game rental program Report: GameStop halts used-games subscription service

"For those guests who have already purchased the service, we will allow them to bring the pass, and video game they have checked-out, back to receive a full refund", the GameStop representative added.

Kotaku reports that GameStop employees have been instructed to remove signage advertising PowerPass from stores.

In a statement provided to GameSpot, the retailer said it chose to "temporarily pause" the launch of the subscription service due to "a few program limitations" that GameStop discovered.

Why GameStop suspended the service right after soft-launching it is unclear. The program was originally scheduled to fully launch in the coming weeks, with sign-ups to begin on November 19.

The retailer has not said when or if the program will be reinstated.

If you were looking forward to becoming one of GameStop's PowerPass subscribers later this month, we have some bad news for you. The company said in a statement that it has identified some limitations to the service so has halted the service. At the end of the six months, customers would be allowed to keep one of the games they had rented during that timespan.

In a likely attempt to stem the tide of game downloads, GameStop has devoted more and more floor space in each store to physical geek culture goods like Funko Pop figurines and T-shirts. Whatever the problem, it was enough to suspend the program indefinitely. This would make a great deal of sense and lines up with the quiet soft-launch so far.

What went wrong? GameStop employees confided to Kotaku that the chain's computers can't handle the burden of managing a PowerPass database. According to GameStop's spokesperson, the company ran into several issues with the program in testing it for launch.
