EgyptAir Airlines plans to buy 12 of Bombardier's biggest variant of the jet, the CS300, and has options for a further 12, the carrier said on Tuesday at the Dubai Air Show. The aircraft are to be powered by Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofans (GTF).

The deal includes 12 additional aircraft with purchase rights.

Airbus agreed in October to take a majority stake in Bombardier's CSeries jetliner program, and has said any CSeries jets intended for the USA market would be built at its production facility in Alabama, potentially allowing the planes to avoid punitive duties.

No Middle East customer has said when it would take delivery of CSeries jets.

That same day, Montreal-based Bombardier said an unidentified European customer was planning to buy 31 C Series aircraft with options for 30 more.

Bombardier is in the process of axing 280 jobs at its factories in the North, and the group is still fighting a ruling from the US Commerce Department that could see import duties of 300 per cent imposed on every CSeries aircraft sold in the US. In October, it said it would impose an 80 percent duty on top of duties of almost 220 percent on the aircraft, a benefit for rival Boeing. The jet, the larger of two C Series versions, can carry 130 to 160 passengers. Egypt Civil Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy said last month that the government expected to pay about $3.3 billion of the cost to acquire 45 planes.
