Magazine named its "men of the year" this morning, with former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick receiving the honor of Citizen of the Year.

Kaepernick began a movement previous year when he kneeled during the national anthem before a game as a way of peacefully protesting injustice toward minorities in the United States.

Announcing its decision on Monday, GQ likened Kaepernick to American sports icons, including boxer Muhammad Ali, who opposed the Vietnam War.

Rapper J. Cole, who met Kaepernick years ago, was frank about his surprise at seeing Kaepernick take a knee before realizing the power of what the quarterback was doing.

"It cost him his job". Apart from his perfectly poised coils, Kaepernick also wears a simple black leather jacket and turtle neck that serve as a powerful backdrop for the GQ logo highlighted in unifying colors of red, white and blue. He posted a message on Twitter, saying he was "honoured' by the recognition". The editors wrote that his act of kneeling during the National Anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality earned him the honor.

Kaepernick declined to be interviewed by GQ but posed for pictures.

A quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Kaepernick was not resigned after the season ended earlier this year.

Brushing aside the issue of racism, Trump, the current United States president, told Kaepernick in August 2016 to "find a country that works better for him".
