Macron Says France Disagrees with Saudi Arabia on Iran

Saudi Arabia launches military strikes on Yemeni capital Bombshell from Saudi foreign minister

His comments came after French President Emmanuel Macron urged firmness with Iran regarding its missile program and influence in the Middle East, in an interview with the United Arab Emirates-based al-Ittihad newspaper.

"The missile that was intercepted by Saudi Arabia launched from Yemen, which obviously is an Iranian missile, shows precisely the strength of their" weapons program, Macron said on November 9.

The president proposed revising the Iran nuclear deal of 2015, saying it "must be preserved", but "complemented with two pillars", which would include "a negotiation on the ballistic activity of Iran, with sanctions if necessary, " and a discussion on "restraining Iranian hegemony in the region".

In his interview with the Time magazine, Macron also appeared to be supporting Washington's position on Iran's ballistic missile capabilities.

In a statement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said the country's defense affairs are not negotiable.

Iran has repeatedly told French officials that the agreement is "not renegotiable and Iran doesn't allow the other sides to annex other issues to it", Qassemi stated.

Harrigian's remarks appear to corroborate Saudi charges attributing the missile to Iran.

The United States has imposed unilateral sanctions on Iran, saying its missile tests violate a U.N. resolution that calls on Tehran not to undertake activities related to missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

"There are negotiations we need to start on Iran's ballistic missiles", Macron said.

The deal between Tehran and six world powers including France, Russia, the US, China, Germany, and the United Kingdom involves the removal of sanctions in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program. During his visit to Dubai on Thursday, he referred to a missile which was sacked from Yemen and intercepted by Saudi Arabia earlier this month. The fate of the deal has fallen on the US Congress which has 60 days to reimpose nuclear sanctions. Tehran says it has no plans to build nuclear-capable missiles and the missile programme is for defence purposes.
