The Bentley Continental GT may be a good-looking luxury grand-tourer, but it also makes a heck of a race vehicle.

This is the second generation Continental GT3 racecar that finds its spot in the lineage along with the 4 1/2 liter, Speed Six, and Speed 8 Le Mans winners that came before it.

Bentley has revealed its new Continental GT3 racecar, a precursor to a hot Continental GT road vehicle which will likely arrive by 2020. It has been developed by Bentley Motorsport in Crewe, with technical assistance from the M-Sport rally team that runs the world championship-winning Ford Fiesta World Rally Car.

Kerb weight of the GT3 is down by at least 950kg; Bentley claims that the vehicle weighs significantly less than 1300kg, from the road-going W12 launch car's 2250kg.

The Continental GT3 shares little with it's road-going brother besides its name and aluminum chassis, helping it weigh less than 2,866 pounds (Bentley won't tell us the exact number), compared with the fully-loaded luxury GT's 5,000-plus pound curb weight.

It is powered by 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 but with engine management from Cosworth for additional racing grunt. Bentley says that unrestricted power is over 550hp.

The powerplant features a new dry sump system and intake and exhaust systems, and is capable of producing more than 550 bhp before Balance of Performance restrictions. The bodywork was crafted in a wind tunnel and suspension and braking systems are bespoke just for the Continental GT3 racer.

Inside, there's a FIA-spec roll-cage and six-point harness, while under-the-skin upgrades include a lightweight racing battery, race-spec ABS and traction control, carbon fibre propshaft and four-way adjustable racing dampers.
