Packers release tight end Martellus Bennett

Packers' Martellus Bennett won't play vs. Bears after shoulder injury Report: Packers cut TE Bennett

Veteran tight end Martellus Bennett, who signed a three-year, $21-million contract during the offseason, was let go by the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday.

Bennett is getting different input from doctors on how to proceed with the injury after missing Monday's loss to the Lions.

During a recent Instagram post, Bennett hinted that he could retire at the end of this season. The Packers may look to add more depth at the tight end position in the near future, quite possibly from practice squad member Emmanuel Byrd.

Information from ESPN's Rob Demovsky and Field Yates and The Associated Press was used in this report.

During the Packers' bye week, Bennett said that he believed this year would be his last in the NFL.

The move to cut the 30-year-old comes after Bennett was ruled out to play for the second week in a row.

In seven games for Green Bay this season, Bennett has recorded 24 receptions for 233 yards and zero touchdowns.

Asked about his sudden desire to leave the game, Bennett was even more vague. That day, Bennett left the locker room telling reporters he wouldn't be talking with them because there was "nothing to talk about".

But his sudden disappearance after Rodgers' injury led multiple players to wonder whether Bennett quit on them in the wake of the quarterback's injury. Said another: "It's just weird".

Bennett was the Packers' biggest free-agent signing during the National Football League offseason. Other NFL teams have until 3 p.m. The Packers' other two tight ends, Richard Rodgers and Lance Kendricks, have a total of 12 catches this season.
