'Brand-new Star Wars trilogy' coming from Rian Johnson, Disney says

The company also said that no release dates have been set for the new films, even though it'd be absolutely nuts to release any Star Wars film at any time outside the month of December - absolute madness!

Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens December 15, 2017.

Lucasfilm confirms Johnson will "introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored".

Rian Johnson, the director behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm announced on Thursday.

"The WSJ did a feature on this "Netflix v Disney" showdown that's coming, and the trade states the following: ".while [Disney] now produces Marvel superhero series such as "Daredevil" for Netflix, new Marvel shows in the future are expected to live on the company's own streaming service".

The plan is for Johnson to write and direct the first movie and shepherd the other two, with his regular producer Ram Bergman along for the ride as well. As he will be back in the coming "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", will fans know what really happen to him in between "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens?".

Finally, the last part of the The Last Jedi DLC for Battlefront 2 is new singleplayer story content. Battlefront 2 Resurrection will add new chapters to the core campaign for free, as you play once again as Commander Iden Versio during the First Order's rise to power before Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi.

There's a lot of speculation that Luke Skywalker might turn away from the Light Side of the Force in The Last Jedi, but if Mark Hamill had his way the film's shocking twist would turn out to be an evil clone of the Jedi warrior. "Rian will do fantastic things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy".

That should quell at least SOME of the rumors of any connection to any Star Wars story yet out in the wild.

"Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it".
