Uber's Flying Taxi Service Faces Many Hurdles, Even With NASA's Help

Uber's Chief Product Officer Jeff Holden says he hopes the service will reduce commute times, cut vehicle pollution in major cities and, eventually, the service will be cheaper than if a person were to drive their own auto.

The ride-sharing startup has said it plans to roll out an on-demand vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) network in Dallas and Dubai by 2020, and Wednesday added Los Angeles to the list.

Los Angeles will be the company's third test city.

Uber will work with the USA space agency to develop software for managing flying taxi routes, Uber's chief product officer Jeff Holden told the Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal on Wednesday night (AEST).

Uber's work with NASA will help solve the problem of operating hundreds or thousands of aircraft over cities and allow uberAIR services to work alongside existing air traffic control systems around busy airports, Reuters said.

Uber unveiled today an agreement with NASA that advances the company's plan to bring flying vehicles to major United States cities. Then, there's the lack of infrastructure fundamental for their support.

And Uber still needs to get approval from regulatory agencies, like the Federal Aviation Administration.

The goal is to make transportation fast, and low-cost - and it hopes the service will be ready for commercial operations "several years ahead" of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Uber doesn't think so. "I think 2020 is realistic for a vehicle that is not replacing an airplane but replacing a auto", Richard Pat Anderson, director of the Flight Research Center at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, told Wired at the time. It's been a really interesting process getting our vehicle manufacturing partners aligned on performance specifications so that they're building vehicles that align with what we need to make Elevate successful. The construction of what is essentially a miniature helicopter or large drones has been conducted by two Nasa veterans, Mark Moore and Tom Prevot, since early this year.

If it all works, the payoff would be a new supply or revenue for the company, and hopefully less stressful rush-hour commutes for consumers.

In its presentation, Uber showed how a 16-mile ride in an Uber auto from Los Angeles International Airport to the Staples Center downtown would usually take about an hour and 20 minutes. "But it's hard to imagine the flying auto becoming a scalable solution".
