Standard equipment includes a seven-speed double clutch transmission complete with its own oil cooler that allows the auto to be driven like a pure automatic, say around town, or as a manual when the road ahead looks exciting.

Five color choices will be available for the M3 CS, with Alpine White being standard.

BMW wrote, "The inline 6-cylinder engine has a long tradition at BMW, and in the first-ever BMW M3 CS it is once again responsible for delivering top performance". A zero to 60 miles per hour sprint now takes just 3.7 seconds (down from the M3's 4 seconds), while the top track speed sits at 174 mph.

The special edition model will be limited to approximately 1,200 units worldwide, with about 550 units heading to the U.S. Those interested in getting their hands on the BMW M3 CS can put their orders in starting May 2018.

That's a startling £25,000 more than the regular M3 fitted with the Competition Package.

The CS comes with adaptive M suspension as standard which drivers can tune to their tastes, as well as traction control and M differential to help put the power down. So petrolheads will be pleased to know the Bavarian brand has applied this recipe to another auto - the M3 saloon, to create the BMW M3 CS. Additionally, the links and wheel carriers are all made from forged aluminium.

It has twin LED headlights, large three-section air intakes, Gurney lip spoiler, front splitter and rear diffuser, which have all been redesigned for the M3 CS.

Other features include BMW Individual Shadow Line high gloss trim and darkened rear taillights, where the latter aren't of the OLED (organic light emitting diode) variety like on the M4 CS. Those wheels are shod with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres (265/35 profile at the front and 285/30 profile at the rear), but if outright performance isn't your thing, you can have Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubbers instead. It gets a new pair of springs and dampers, giving it more focused handling, according to BMW. Those at the front will find themselves seated on the same lightweight M sports seats from the M3 with Competition Package, featuring Merino leather with grey contrast stitching. Seats and door panels are finished in two-tone leather and Alcantara, while the vehicle also gets BMW's top specification infotainment and a Harman Kardon sound system.
