Former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher says that Raheem Sterling deserved to win a penalty for Manchester City in their 3-1 win over Arsenal.

Gunners boss Wenger had fumed about both that penalty, which Sergio Aguero converted to double the hosts' advantage at the Etihad Stadium, and City's third goal. "We know that Raheem Sterling dives well, he does that very well", the Frenchman was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

Sterling and Monreal came together early in the second half, with the Spaniard clumsily attempting to win the ball and failing to do so, sending Sterling to the ground in the process. I feel they don't work enough, because it happens every season.

While Wenger has a valid point concerning City's third goal at least, the reality is that Arsenal were only in the game going into the final quarter thanks to a couple of excellent saves from Petr Cech and some wayward finishing from the rampant league leaders.

Taking issue with refereeing decisions and criticism from pundits is nothing new, but if Wenger can't address the problems his side are evidently facing, the Gunners will only struggle even more. Past year we had two offsides goals against us.

Wright said Wenger's comments were "too strong for me". I am very upset because at 2-1 we were in the game.

"Once again the referee made the decision today, with a soft penalty and an offside goal", he told Sky Sports.

"But we are used to it when coming here, a year ago they had two offside goals, and once again". The third goal was the killer.

His outburst angered Shearer, though, the Newcastle United legend calling on Wenger to apologise to the England worldwide.

"You spend £50m on a centre-forward and you think in those big games, he's the one who has got to make the difference", Shearer said on Match of the Day 2. "It's one thing to deflect from his own team's inadequacies and deficiencies, it's another one to question someone's integrity and be wrong. It is very harsh for him to say that".

He added: "When you see the incident, it was a penalty".

"I think he owes Sterling an apology there".

City manager Pep Guardiola had no time for Wenger's complaints.
