AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) today announced that it designed a semi-custom graphics processor unit (GPU) that will be integrated into a new Intel multi-chip processor package.

Specifically, the new processor integrates a "semi-custom" AMD graphics chip and the second generation of Intel's "High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2)", which is comparable to GDDR 5 in a traditional laptop. Nevertheless, Intel did pointed out that the new processor is combination of Intel Core H-series CPU together with a semi-custom AMD Radeon GPU.

The new chip will be the first consumer product to use EMIB and the first mobile PC to utilize HBM2. Up until the launch of the combined Intel and AMD chip, gaming computers, be it a laptop or desktop, required an Intel semiconductor as well as a high-end chip from either Nvidia or AMD. For several quarters, Nvidia's business selling chips to data centers has been up by triple digits from the previous year, presumably displacing sales of Intel processors. This will be the first use of EMIB, and another technology that covers the chips, with this other being a power sharing framework. The goal is to deliver driver updates for new games on the day they are released, or shortly before, just as AMD and Nvidia now do with their gaming graphics products. This technology is described as a bridge that allows heterogeneous silicon to quickly pass information in extremely close proximity.

Electronic chip manufacturer rivals Intel and AMD are are teaming up to make chips that will give thin laptops an unprecedented power boost, Intel announced on Monday in a press release. EMIB eliminates height impact as well as manufacturing and design complexities, enabling faster, more powerful and more efficient products in smaller sizes. Intel shares were up 0.8%, near 46.50.

"Not only does it help manage temperature, power delivery and performance state in real time, it also enables system designers to adjust the ratio of power sharing between the processor and graphics based on workloads and usages, like performance gaming", Walker wrote. And, this is what Intel and AMD are trying to focus on along with chipping away at some of Nvidia's market.

Intel will work with AMD on drivers for the Radeon GPU, with AMD writing the initial code and Intel packaging them for users to download. We have some HUGE news for you in the computing world and it is sure to rock long-standing factions that have stood behind Intel and AMD processors to the very "Core".

Both AMD and Intel told PCWorld that the product of AMD-Intel will be an "evolution" of Intel's 8th-generation, H-series Core chips with the capability to preserve battery life.
