Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Guru Nanak Gurpurab and Guru Nanak's Prakash Utsav marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, first Sikh Guru. - TNSMohali: Devotees thronged gurdwaras in Mohali on Saturday to offer prayers to celebrate the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

Addressing the main ceremony at Guru Nanak Janam Asthan, Evacuee Trust Property Board Chairman Siddiqul Farooq said that founder of Sikh religion gave message of peace.

Soon after their arrival, the pilgrims left for Janum Asthan of Baba Guru Nanak at Nankana Sahib.

Canada is proud to be home to one of the largest Sikh communities outside India. These Gurus were responsible for shaping the beliefs of the Sikhs.

"During his lifetime, Guru Nanak travelled extensively promoting equality, diversity, compassion and tolerance, which became the core principles of Sikhism".

This year will mark the 548th birthday of Guru Nanak. Gurdwaras across the city were decked up with lights and flowers. The Vice-Chancellor motivated the students to imbibe in themselves the teachings and message of Guru Nanak Dev ji.

The day begins with the singing of morning hymns and is followed by Katha and Kirtan, which is recital of scriptures and hymns in the praise of the Guru. "Satgur Nanak pargatya, miti dhundh jag chanan hoya" and other verses of Gurbani were sung by kirtani jathas and devotees at the procession.
