Tapanuli Orangutan: Scientists Just Discovered a Completely New Species of Great Ape

A third species of orangutan has been recognised- but less than a thousand are still alive warns new research. The new species has been called the Tapanuli orangutan Pongo Tapanuliensis: Third Orangutan Species Identified, Already Facing Severe Extinction Risk

Scientists weren't sure the unique orangutan population existed until 1997. "I am sure that they will be conserved", Wiratno said at a media gathering in Jakarta on Friday (03/11). The new species, Pongo tapanuliensis, or the Tapanuli orangutan, was described as living only in an area of forest about 425 square miles in size.

With only a population of 800, the Tapanuli orangutans, which have thick curly hair, became the third species of the giant ape found in the country.

The research is based on analysis of the skeleton of an adult male killed in a conflict with villagers, a genetic study indicating the population's evolutionary split from other orangutans occurred about 3.4 million years ago, and analysis since 2006 of behavioral and habitat differences.

"It is very exciting to discover a new great ape species in the 21st century", Kr├╝tzen said in the University of Zurich statement.

It is the seventh living species of great apes, which besides humans, are the Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, eastern and western gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. Historically, the population had low levels of interbreeding with Sumatran orangutans further north but that completely ceased 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, according to the genetic study.

It was only after identifying key differences in the teeth, skull, DNA, diet and calls of the Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) that the global team concluded they had found a unique species.

"The Batang Toru orangutans appear to be direct descendants of the initial orangutans that had migrated from mainland Asia, and thus constitute the oldest evolutionary line within the genus Pongo", says one of the team, evolutionary biologist Alexander Nater from the University of Zurich.

A chance to explore Tapanuli orangutans' biology came in 2013. The Batang Toru orangutan is under threat from poaching and habitat loss.

Wiratno, director-general of natural resources conservation and ecosystem at Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forests, who like many Indonesians only uses his first name, said Batang Toru is not included in the protected forest area. If after 200 years of serious biological research we can still find new species in this group, what does it tell us about all the other stuff that we are overlooking: hidden species, unknown ecological relationships, critical thresholds we shouldn't cross?

By the latest estimate, there should be no more than 800 individuals belonging to the new orangutan species. "Humans are conducting a vast global experiment, but we have near-zero understanding of what impacts this really has, and how it could ultimately undermine our own survival". They live more solitary lives than other great apes, sleeping and eating fruit in the forest canopy and swinging from branch to branch.
