Secret chamber discovered in Egypt's Great Pyramid

Cosmic rays lead to pyramid discovery Scientists Have Found A Big Hole In The Biggest Pyramid In Egypt

The known specifics about the space, which according to NPR is the "first significant internal structure found within the Great Pyramid since the 19th century", are pretty slim.

The chamber connects the burial site of the queen to that of the king and therefore it is possible that the chamber was used as a passageway between the two rooms.

Scientists do not yet know the role the void played in the Great Pyramid's construction, or its use.

A team of experts at ScanPyramids, however, realized the technology used to examine the insides of a volcano - called muography - could be used to look within the pyramids.

But new research into these vast structures has revealed something no one has seen for thousands of years, a giant void in an unmapped part of the Great Pyramid of Giza, according to Natural Geographic. The newly discovered aspect, which scientists found by using a technique similar to an X-ray, is about the same size as the Grand Gallery, so around 100 or so feet long.

To find out more about the Pyramid, researchers from countries including France and Japan began a project to scan the structure in October 2015.They employed by-products of the cosmic ray known as muons that are only partially absorbed by stone and take noticeably different trajectories through air.

At present, neither the particle physicists nor the world's Egyptologists have any idea just what objective the Big Void filled, nor what artefacts, if any, maybe sealed inside it.

The Great Pyramid, or Khufu's Pyramid, was constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu between 2509 and 2483 BC.

Muons are made when cosmic rays from deep space hit the atoms of the upper atmosphere. If there's a big void, lots of muons will flow through.

The scattering of the muons was recorded on an extremely sensitive photographic medium known as nuclear emulsion film, which had been positioned in the Queen's chamber, inside the pyramid.

Its discovery was born out of the worldwide ScanPyramids project launched in 2015 that aims to use the latest in imaging technology to map the structures without disturbing them. However, some historians are more excited than others about the discovery.

To this day, the Egyptian pyramids remain a marvel of engineering with archaeologists still racking their brains to figure out how the ancient Egyptians were able to carry out such an endeavur. Egyptologists banned the use of destructive methods to study the pyramids.
