Their nozzles also may detach with enough force "to pose an impact hazard", the CPSC said.

Some commercial trucks, RVs and boats came with the fire extinguishers also.

They were sold at Menards, Montgomery Ward, Sears, Home Depot, Wal-Mart and other home and hardware stores, as well as on Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and assorted online retailers.

- A company is recalling almost 40 million fire extinguishers due to a risky malfunction that have led to at least one death according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Almost 40 million fire extinguishers in the U.S. and Canada have been recalled, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The model numbers are printed on the body of the fire extinguisher (see photos above and below).

Kidde has announced it will replace defective extinguishers free with the new ones that are made with metal parts. In 2014, extinguishers didn't work for emergency responders who were trying to fight a vehicle fire after a crash. No injuries had resulted from those malfunctions at the time of the recalls. Customers should call the company at 855-271-0773, 8:30 a.m.to 5 p.m. No proof of purchase is required, however, a model number, year of manufacture, and the unit's date code and serial number must be provided. Some of them were included in prior recalls in March 2009 and February 2015, while others were sold more recently.

If Kidde determines that you have an affected model, the company says it will send you a replacement within 10 to 15 business days.
