Using Marijuana Regularly Could Mean More Frequent Sex, Study Suggests

The study does not, however, necessarily indicate a causal relationship between marijuana use and sex.

If research is to be believed, people who smoke weed every day are having around 20% more sex than people who smoke occasionally or don't smoke at all.

People who smoke marijuana regularly definitely need to be wary of the many effects weed may have on their bodies.

"What we found was compared to never-users, those who reported daily use had about 20% more sex".

That amounts to roughly 20 percent higher frequency of sexual intercourse for people who consume marijuana.

Researchers reached their conclusions after a retrospective analysis of data on 50,000 Americans ages 25 to 45, compiled from 2002 to 2015 by the National Survey of Family Growth. The women who had not smoked weed in the past one year were found to have had sex 6.0 times on average in the last month in comparison with 7.1 times for the females who smoked up. Among men, those who didn't smoke pot had sex 5.6 times in four weeks, while those who smoked daily had sex 6.9 times. "We don't want people to smoke to improve sexual function, but it probably doesn't hurt things", says Eisenberg.

The study is the first to examine the relationship between marijuana use and frequency of sexual intercourse at the population level in the United States. "If anything, it's associated with increased coital frequency", said senior author Michael Eisenberg, an assistant professor of urology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Marijuana is legal for medical or recreational adult use in 29 states and the District of Columbia in the US.

Once the research team detected the positive link between pot use and sexual frequency, they thought there would be some groups for whom this pattern did not hold true.

In all, 24.5 percent of men and 14.5 percent of women reported having used cannabis, and the data show a positive correlation between frequency of marijuana consumption and frequency of sex.

The researchers found that the volunteers who had smoked marijuana were the ones who were more sexually active. "However, the fact that the association persists for all the subgroups - age, marital status, education, religion, etc. - suggests that there may be some biological explanation".

Furthermore, the link could still be seen even after accounting for the participant's use of other drugs.

Sex also rose steadily with increasing marijuana use.

That said, research shows that the average couple has sex roughly once a week.
