The potentially moderate to severe flu season has health officials urging people to get their flu shots as soon as possible.

Influenza cases are broken down by specific age groups and counties, the number of deaths resulting from influenza and the current influenza activity level being reported in the state. "We'll see people hospitalized, and we'll see outbreaks in long-term care facilities".

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced today that CDPH has received the first report of an influenza-associated fatality in a person under the age of 65 for the 2017-2018 flu season.

The CDC recommends vaccinations for those under 5 years of age, especially 2 or younger, and 65 years of age get vaccinated as they are at high risk to develop flu-related complications, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections.

AHS officials say they're trying to nudge up the vaccination rate from last year's 27% and have procured enough vaccine to cover 35% of the population.

Flu vaccines often aren't more effective than 40% to 50% but MacDonald said with year's formula attacking three to four different strains of flu, its benefits are clear.

They say people with chronic lung or heart disease, kidney or liver disease, HIV, diabetes, pregnant women, those who are obese and healthcare workers should get the vaccine. "We try very hard to get message out they are safe and the effective", Haupt said.

"You may be healthy now, but without immunization, everyone is at risk". For more information on influenza or the availability of flu vaccine, Kentuckians should contact their primary care medical provider or local health department.

Flu vaccines are offered by many doctor's offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers and some schools. No appoints are necessary and the shots are covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare Part B.
