The idea is the brainchild of software engineer Kelly Ellis in defense of actress Rose McGowan and "all the victims of hate and harassment Twitter fails to support". The sanctions came after the Charmed and Nip/Tuck star talked about the Weinstein allegations.

On Thursday actress Rose McGowan, who has been tweeting about the allegations against Harvey Weinstein all week, tweeted that "HW raped me". The social network's lack of transparency has led to a great deal of frustration and confusion. According to a tweet, Twitter suspended the account because she posted a "private phone number".

McGowan concluded her tweets by calling on Bezos, 53, to "stop funding rapists, alleged pedos and sexual harassers".

McGowan tweeted the call for #WomenBoycottTwitter on Thursday night, saying, "At midnight we RISE". McGowan moved to Instagram to announce that her service had been frozen.

Let me get this straight. Quite a few Twitter users noticed the company seems to have an exceptionally arbitrary and unclear policy on suspending accounts.

The company's official account also tweeted: "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".

Twitter has faced frequent criticism for failing to address the torrents of abusive comments directed at women, minorities and those who speak out against abuse.

Canadian television writer Emily Andras, known for the series Wyonna Earp, tweeted the boycott is about respect for women - but some critics say silence is not the way to fight abuse.

McGowan was identified in a New York Times article last week as receiving a financial settlement from Weinstein over an encounter with the producer at the Sundance Film Festival in 1997. She previous year said that she had been raped by a "studio head".
