A stronger Hurricane Ophelia continued tracking northeastward on Thursday morning, far from the U.S.

"After that, indications are that by that point it will then have weakened and be no longer a hurricane or tropical storm - it will be extratropical".

University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy says Ophelia is the 10th straight tropical storm to become a hurricane in an Atlantic season.

The consecutive hurricane streak began quietly on August 9 when Tropical Storm Franklin strengthened into the season's first hurricane while over the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico.

This began a brutal six-week stretch that saw Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Nate devastate parts of the US Gulf Coast and many Caribbean Islands. That's according to Midland Weather Channel's Cathal Nolan who says the wind storm could have the potential to cause power disruption and the felling of trees. This has not happened in 124 years, or since 1893.

Hurricane Ophelia continues to slowly drift to the northeast over the northeastern Atlantic.

Ophelia will get caught in the "westerlies", the jet-stream-powered flow that moves mid-latitude weather from west to east, over the weekend as it passes Portugal and Spain and heads towards Ireland.

Hurricane Ophelia is set to batter Britain over the weekend Will Hurricane Ophelia hit Britain?

The NOAA's National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that the storm will batter Ireland and the United Kingdom with torrential rain and powerful gusts.

Forecasters said Ophelia will likely bring some impacts to those areas, but it's still too early to say what they will be.
