On the US -based Bitfinex exchange, bitcoin rose to $5,228.3 up $403.5, or 8.36%, exceeding a previous high of $5,013.91 reached on September 2.

Bitcoin is the biggest and most popular cryptocurrency.

"People are just wanting to be part of it", said Ryan Nettles, head of FX trading and market strategy at Swiss bank Swissquote, which launched bitcoin trading two months ago.

The news come a month after China clamped down on bitcoin-related activity, ordering domestic bitcoin exchanges to cease operations.

Bitcoin has an intraday high of $5280 and ended yesterday at $5226.

It's the first time the cryptocurrency has confidently shot past $5,000. High Bitcoin transactions show the high levels of interests the public has on Bitcoin. As recently as December, bitcoin was trading at less than $1 000 dollars.

The primary factor driving the bitcoin price's record rally appears to be skepticism that the controversial SegWit2x hard fork will be executed in November, or, that if it is deployed, the resulting blockchain will not be able to compete with the incumbent Bitcoin network.

"For most currencies there are several accepted methodologies for estimating relative value, normally based on macroeconomic fundamentals", said EFG Asset Management's Global Head of Research, Daniel Murray.

Traders also seemed to shrug off negative news from Russian Federation, where that "buyers of cryptocurrencies could be involved in unlawful activities".
