Facebook outages reported in US, Europe

Independent website Down Detector has received reports from hundreds of Facebook users saying the service isn't working.

More than 3,500 people had reported outages Wednesday, according to the outage report.

Facebook is aware of the issue, but hasn't provided any more information about what might be behind the outage. Outage Report is also monitoring the problem, which it says started at 11.11 a.m ET.

Facebook and Instagram have become irreplaceable platforms in society, respectively hosting over two billion and over 700 million people per month.

Mashable reports that both desktop and mobile users are experiencing problems.

#FacebookDown began trending on Twitter worldwide around 6pm SAST, as Twitter remained functional.

The issue is a global one with people suffering social media downtime in South America, parts of Asia and Europe.

On Facebook, users were unable to post status updates while Instagram users experienced a similar issue.
