San Francisco: Amazon.com Inc. introduced on Wednesday a waterproof Kindle e-reader long-awaited by enthusiasts, the latest in a string of consumer devices from the online retail giant this year. While it's still Amazon's most expensive Kindle, that's a pretty sizeable price cut from the original Oasis, which cost $360.

The upgraded Kindle also boasts a seven-inch screen, one inch larger than its predecessor, and has the capacity to play audiobooks from Audible, the Amazon-owned retailer. It also comes along with fast-charging capability that enables the device to be fully charged in two hours.

Amazon has been selling Kindles for 10 years now, but "waterproof" never appeared on its list of incremental technological advancements - until now. On the hardware front, the Oasis now has an ambient light sensor, allowing it to adjust its front light automatically.

The Kindle has a battery life which can last for weeks and the screen size measures upto 7-inches. The thinnest point tapers to 3.4mm. On one side, the Kindle Oasis has a larger bezel accompanied by page turn buttons, allowing easier handling. These now appear on the device's home screen alongside your ebooks and can be streamed via Bluetooth to wireless speakers and headphones. If you're a subscriber, it will list your books alongside your Kindle titles - and if you want to listen, you can simply pair with either a bluetooth speaker or bluetooth headphones.

The screen is also the brightest Amazon's offered up.

Amazon has announced the all-new Kindle Oasis, which it dubs the most advanced Kindle ever. Customers will also be given the choice to buy the audio version of a Kindle book they've just purchased for the reduced price of £2.99.

You can pay $389 for the Wi-Fi-only 8GB Kindle Oasis for a pre-order today, or $529 for the 32GB version with free worldwide 3G; it'll be stocked by both JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks.

Amazon has also increased the number of customisation options available on the Oasis, including more type faces, a greater level of boldness gradation and font sizes and the ability to left-align text to better match the design of paper books. This new version of the device starts at $250, more than double the cost of the company's popular Kindle Paperwhite. And if you've just got to have cellular connectivity, you can nab that together with 32GB of storage for $350/£320. Storage starts at 8 GB and goes all the way up to 32 GB, if you need that much.
