Socceroos 2 Syria 1

Cahill soars against Japan Cahill soars against Japan

Tuesday night's Tim Cahill show gave the national team a 2-1 second-leg win over Syria that sealed the team's spot in an intercontinental play-off against the fourth-place team CONCACAF nation for a place in Russian Federation.

Australia ended Syria's World Cup dream tonight after scoring an extra-time victor to secure a final play-off place for Russian Federation 2018. Robbie Kruse found space on the left-edge of the box and crossed for Cahill to head in his 50th global goal for Australia.

Syrian winger Mahmoud Al-Mawas was shown a red card in the 94th minute.

"I$3 hope Australia win".

A full match report is here, and video highlights are below.

The midfielder, who plays for the Dhofar Club in Oman, spotted Omar Al Somah's run and threaded a through ball into his path.

Beating Uzbekistan to set up a meeting with Australia, they drew 1-1 last week in Malaysia to leave themselves with a fighting chance of making the next round. He was central striker for the Australians and both goals were excellent headers. The game will kick-off at 2:30 PM IST on October 10.

Those combinations helped put James Troisi into the box to feed Cahill, but his right-footed finish was blocked by a defender's thigh with the goal beckoning.

No doubt Cahill will go down as one of the Socceroos' best of all-time when the 37-year-old finally retires, but for now his leadership, confidence and goal-scoring is invaluable to a plucky Australian side.

As penalties beckoned, Robbie Kruse sent over a cross from the byline and Cahill out-jumped his marker to power a header past the diving Ibrahim Alma.

Australia will now face one of Honduras, Panama or the United States to confirm their place in Russian Federation next summer.

An incredible underdog story or a misleading extension of a destructive regime, Cahill has invariably left that discussion redundant for the time being - it is Australia who have progressed here.
