Joel Embiid, Sixers agree to monster five-year, $148 million extension

Sources: Joel Embiid OKs five-year, $148M deal with Sixers Report: Joel Embiid, 76ers Agree To 5-Year, $148 Million Deal

After garnering a five-year, $148 million extension from the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, center Joel Embiid is now listed as probable to make his preseason debut on Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets, according to Jessica Camerato of CSN Philly. Should he meet the super max criteria over the course of his deal, he could earn as much as $178 million.

Embiid, 23, has suited up in just 31 games since being picked third overal in the 2014 NBA Draft. He also grabbed almost eight rebounds in 25.4 minutes per contest, averaged 2.5 blocks, and shot 36.7 percent from three, stretching defenses with his range, driving to the hole at will, and getting to the line, averaging almost eight free throw attempts per game last season. What if Joel Embiid is never healthy?

Based on the details of what sources are describing as a complex contract structure, the 76ers would have to waive Embiid for him not to reach the full value of his $148 million extension. Aside from injuries, Parker has showed talent and potential to be worth similar to what Wiggins and Embiid will receiver.

The obvious concern is making sure that Embiid's body is able to hold up long enough for him to be able to see out the length of his contract, but the team must feel confident enough about his longterm health to be willing to back up the Brink's truck for him. The question is how often they'll get to have Embiid on the floor.

When he did play last season, the Sixers were a viable playoff contender. The 76ers expect big things out of the talented young trio of Embiid, Ben Simmons (the No. 1 overall pick in 2016) and Markelle Fultz (the No. 1 overall selection in 2017) moving forward.

Had he played more many believe he was a shoe-in to win Rookie of the Year. The seven-footer arguably has the funniest Twitter page of all the National Basketball Association players, he's publicly tried to get with Rihanna on multiple occasions, and he has embraced a motto fans used to describe the franchise's transition from doom to hope. Last season, he suffered a knee injury that ended his season prematurely.

Given Embiid's more than troubling injury history, it makes sense that the Sixers put an escape hatch in this contract, but it remains to be seen just how readily available it is.

The building process saw the 76ers go 28-54 last season after winning fewer than 20 games each of the previous three seasons. His last game was January 27.
